Gender Wiki

Femme is a feminine gender role which is sometimes used as its own gender identity. It describes anyone whose gender identity and/or gender expression is feminine.[1]

History[]

The term femme originated in communities of sapphic women. "Femme" referred to sapphics who often presented as feminine and took on a stereotypically feminine role. Femmes are often assumed to be sexually attracted to butches and/or masculine women, although this is not always the case. The first recorded use of the word "femme" in a queer context was used by a friend of a lesbian woman, Anne Lister, to describe her bisexual lover, Marianna Lawton, as “plus femme que moi” [more womanly than me].

Femme was originally used by those assigned female at birth, especially lesbians, but has been increasingly adopted by transgender women and others in the transgender community, as well as other individuals who are not AFAB, such as feminine males and other people that are not AFAB.
