Explicitly trans fiction[]
Examples[]
- Rain, a slice-of-life dramedy with a MTF transgender protagonist with trans male and genderfluid characters
- Venus Envy, a transgender-centered webcomic with both a MTF character as well as a FTM character
Related tropes[]
Gender Bender[]
Can be split into "magical" gender bender and crossdresser gender bender. In "magical" gender bender, a character's physical sex changes. In “crossdresser” gender bender, the change is merely a change of gender expression.
Warning: early gender bender fiction can be transphobic (for example, through the man in a dress trope) and/or misogynistic (for example in "magical" gender bender MTF stories, greatly weakening the gender bent person).
Examples[]
- Ranma 1/2, a MTF bidirectional (meaning he can change back to male easily) "magical" gender bender with a couple of crossdresser sub characters)
- Futaba-Kun Change, with multiple bidirectional "magical" gender benders with hard to define sex due to the trigger for changing being sexual arousal
- Stop!! Hibari-kun!, in which Hibari Ōzora seems to be a transwoman though that word is never used to refer to her. The transphobia mainly comes from her dad Ibari, who wants a male heir, and Kōsaku Sakamoto (due to homophobia, however he gets over it and starts to like Hibari), and her two years older sister Tsubame, who is also partial ticked at Hibari constantly taking her underwear near the story start (Hibari gets her own as the story goes on). Deals with passing as transgender person in Japan including passing health checks, passing in a swimsuit for gym and foiling female on female bullying. While some people in Hibari's life are transphobic the narrative is not, transphobia plays only a small part in the story (mainly in motivating some schemes by her father) and she is treated as female by the narrative. The one and only time we see Hibari's chest is early on when she exits the bath with only a towel around her waist every other time the characters may see but the audience does not. The author seems aware of trans issues and coping mechanisms and possibly became more aware as the story was serialized to the point that they introduced a trans character already on HRT (Supervised or DIY is unknown) late into the manga.
- Family Compo, a trans aware “crossdresser” gender bender. The depicted characters seem to be trans. The story sometimes confuses crossdressing with transsexuality and/or being transgender. Also, it has an FTM strong secondary character and possibly nonbinary/questioning character. All other transpeople depicted are MTF. Trigger warning: the characters are sometimes subjugated to transphobic jokes and the protagonist is not trans and can be transphobic at times.
- Misfile, a trans aware (as in, the author has trans family members) "magical" MTF gender bender. Notable because the protagonist is arguably a trans male after the gender bending.
