Welcome to the Gender Wiki's official guide for how to create a coining post for a new identity and/or flag!

How to Make a Coining Post[]

Coining an Identity[]

Requirements[]

These are the required elements of the coining post for a gender identity:

  1. The term's name
  2. The term's definition

If either of these elements are missing, the post does not count as a coining post. (Though, it is okay to ask other users for help in creating a name for the term if you'd prefer.)

Circumstantial[]

These elements are required only if they apply to the identity you are coining:

  1. If the identity is exclusive to a certain group (such as neurogender, for example) then you must include that in the coining post.
  2. If the identity is a subset of another identity (meaning that it falls into the category of an umbrella term or is a slightly varied version of another term, such as paragirl being a subset of demigirl) then you may add that to the coining post as well.
  3. If the identity is an umbrella term, meaning that its definition is a broader definition that could fit multiple, more specific labels, you may list these labels.
  4. If you are coining multiple identities in one post, be sure to separate them, and be specific as to which definition (and possibly flag) matches which name.

Optional[]

These elements are optional, and may or may not be included in the identity's coining:

  1. If you have designed a flag for the identity, it may be included in the coining post. You don't need a flag to coin an identity.
    1. If there is no flag, you may ask another user to make one or they may offer to make one, or an alternate. You are allowed to decline.
  2. If you would like someone else to coin an identity related to the one you are coining or subsets for it, you may request it in the post. (You don't have to ask a specific person; most likely, someone will offer to do it in response to a general request.)
  3. If there are any alternate names for the identity you're coining, you can include them too.

Coining a Flag for an Existing Identity[]

Requirements[]

There are only two requirements for coining a flag for a preexisting identity:

  1. The name of the identity the flag is for
  2. The flag design itself

Flags are allowed to be as simple or intricate as you desire, so long as they are different from any other preexisting flags. You can also coin an alternate flag for an identity that already has one if you prefer a different design, unless the coiner of the identity specifically asked that there be no alternate flags.

Optional[]

These elements of a flag coining post are optional:

  1. You may add a definition or brief definition of the identity, without changing it significantly, so others know the meaning of the identity you are coining the flag for.
  2. If there are meanings to the colors and/or symbols on the flag, such as a certain color representing a certain gender aspect, you may add the meanings.

Examples[]

This table holds links to examples of real coining posts.

Coining Post FAQs[]

What is "Coining" mean? What's a coining post?[]

"Coining" is the act of creating something, generally a term; we use it to refer to when someone creates a new gender and/or flag, and say that '[___] coined this.' A coining post is a post, whether in your user blog on in Discussions (or an a platform other than Fandom), that shares the original creation of a new identity.

Can't I just make the page?[]

It's against our wiki policies to coin an identity via page creation. You have to make a coining post to reference on the page, according to the Gender Wiki's editing and especially citing standards. If there is no coining post, the page will be moved into your userspace, meaning that it is only available through searching or a direct link, until a coining post is made and referenced.

Why do I need to make a coining post?[]

The reasoning behind this policy of our citing standards is that anyone can edit a wiki page, while coining posts can't be changed (with the exception of admin privileges, on this wiki). Since that post can't be edited, we can fit the page to what you meant by the coining, not the interpretation of anyone with a Fandom account. It's also proof that you actually did coin the identity/flag.

Where do I make a coining post?[]

You can put a coining post in Discussions or on your user blog. To find your user blog, go to your profile (easily accessible on laptop/desktop view) and click the third tab under the profile info, titled "Blog." You can then click "Create Blog Post" and make your coining post. To find Discussions, you can click that link or go to the first dropdown (titled "Explore") on the navigation bar at the top of the screen and click the second option in the dropdown, Discuss.

What if I still have questions?[]

If you still have questions or concerns regarding coining posts, you can ask a member of our wiki staff on their message wall. We're always happy to help!
