Transformista flag.
Transformista is a spanish[1], catalan[2] and portuguese[3] word for person who dresses in clothing of the opposite gender out of artistic interests. Drag queen, travesti, tranvestite and transformista are similar but distinct terms.
Although these three words are often used interchangeably by the general population, there are some differences in their usage. Travesti can be used in general for gender non-conforming men, transgender women (only as a re-appropriated term and under use by the trans community) and even as a gender identity in itself, drag queen and transformista are more commonly used to refer to an artistic activity. Drag queen refers to a performer who does not necessarily dress as the opposite gender (see bio queens). They can also engage in things like singing, theater, skating, acting, dancing, lip-syncing, etc. Transformista falls under the category of drag and usually refers only to dressing in clothing of the opposite gender and impersonation, more like a female impersonator than anything else, focused on the aspect of transformation.[4]
Transformist (even when it falls on the drag spectrum) is most often used as a synonym for cross-dresser.
